TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif underlined that the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) is part of the UN Security Council’s Resolution 2231, adding that it would not exist without the nuclear agreement.

The Iranian foreign minister in a Twitter message on Tuesday said that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pretends that the UN resolution is independent of the Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“@SecPompeo pretends UNSCR 2231 is independent of #JCPOA.

He should READ in 2231. JCPOA is PART of 2231. That’s why it’s 104 pages—& why he’s not read it.

2231 for Dummies:

-It would NOT EXIST w/o JCPOA

-The US violated it & prevented others from complying

-US has NO standing”, Zarif twitted.

Zarif’s comments came as the US secretary of state has ramped up his attempts in recent weeks to extend Iran arms embargo which expires in October under Iran’s nuclear agreement with world powers.

Washington is legally prohibited from taking such action as it left the deal in May 2018 and reimposed harsh sanctions on Iran.

The US claims that Washington has not quit the Iran nuclear deal and technically remains a “participant state.”

“US Security Council Resolution 2231 is unambiguous where the United States is a participant,” Pompeo claimed at a press briefing Wednesday. “We are going to make sure that come October of this year, the Iranians aren’t able to buy conventional weapons.”

A report by The New York Times on April 26 said Pompeo plans to invoke a provision in the UN-endorsed international nuclear agreement in an attempt to either extend beyond October the UN arms embargo in place against Iran since 2006/2007 or get the world body to slap even harsher sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

But a renewal of the arms embargo is likely to meet opposition from Russia and China, which have veto power in the Security Council.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi on Monday vowed to give a “decisive response” to a potential extension of an arms embargo against the country, according to Press TV.

Mousavi said, “Iran will serve an appropriate and decisive response to such a measure”, referring to the potential submission of Iran’s case to the United Nations Security Council and the likely extension of the embargo.

Mousavi hoped for such a prospect not to come about.

“We are waiting to see the direction in which the circumstances are going to develop, and will then act based on them and deliver a response,” he said.

Mousavi noted that the US was no longer a party to the agreement that is officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“The US has a historical record of non-commitment to its international obligations,” he said. “[Its actions concerning] the JCPOA manifest one of its unilateral approaches, which showed it is a regime that does not believe in the rule of law and international regulations and is the biggest violator of those regulations.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi has argued that Iran’s missile tests are not banned under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231.

During a presser in the northwestern city of Tabriz on Saturday, Mousavi criticized some Western countries’ position on Iran’s missile tests, Tasnim reported.

He said the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), has nothing to do with missile tests.

The JCPOA was struck between Iran and six world powers, including the U.S., Russia, China, France, Britain, and Germany, on July 14, 2015.

However, Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from the deal in May 2018 and adopted what his administration called the policy of “maximum pressure” to force Tehran into writing another deal.

Only nuclear issues were discussed with the world powers during the negotiations that led to the JCPOA, Mousavi stated.

Noting that they unsuccessfully tried to raise the issue of missiles in the negotiations, he underlined that Resolution 2231 has not banned Iran from missile tests and they are well aware of it.

“We regard statements about Iran’s missile tests as meddlesome and reject them,” the spokesman added.

Resolution 2231, adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council in July 2015, endorsed the Iran nuclear agreement. While the resolution “calls upon” Iran not to test nuclear-capable missiles, it does not ban Iran to conduct missile tests.

Back in December 2018, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA do not restrict Iran’s missile program.

Zarif reiterated Iran’s long-held policy that Tehran does not seek to build nuclear weapons and that the country’s missiles are not designed to carry nuclear warheads.

Iran maintains that its missile program is totally deterrent in nature and is part of the country’s unstoppable defense program.

Axel Kenes, the Belgian Foreign Ministry’s Director-General for Multilateral Affairs and Globalisation, met with Gholam-Hossein Dehghani, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs on Wednesday in Tehran.

During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on various international issues including the full implementation of the Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the JCPOA, and the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 by all parties.

Dehghani slammed the UN Secretariat’s reports on the implementation of the Security Council Resolution 2231, which ignore the United States’ repeated violations of the JCPOA and the Resolution.

He also underlined the significant role of other Security Council member states in opposition to the US’ unilateralism and the instrumental use of the UN principal organs.

The Iranian diplomat also pointed to the Security Council’s one-sided approach on issues like the Yemen crisis and its insufficient attention to the humanitarian aspects of such crises.

He urged Belgium as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council which represents all other UN member states to make further efforts to settle those crises peacefully.

Kenes, whose country acts as a facilitator of the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 2231, was on a two-day trip to Tehran, during which he also held talks with deputy FM Araghchi and Iran’s senior negotiator in Yemen and Syria talks Ali-Asghar Khaji.
