TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC), together with the Qatar Football Association (QFA), on Thursday confirmed Doha, Qatar, as the venue for this year’s AFC Champions League single-leg final, which will be held on December 19.

With the successful conclusion of the AFC Champions League West zone matches in Qatar recently, as well as the upcoming preparations to host the East region fixtures next month, the AFC noted that the QFA met all the necessary hosting capability, capacity and medical infrastructure to host the final of Asia’s premier club competition, the-afc.com reported.

AFC Secretary-General Dato’ Windsor John, said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly made the decision on the venue for this year’s final more complex particularly in these uncertain times of travel and health restrictions.

“In addition to the numerous restrictions, the AFC also wanted to protect the important principle of sporting fair play. This will be, unlike previous years, a one-off final and we therefore needed to ensure that there was no unfair advantage to one team or the other.

“The successful staging of the AFC Champions League (West) is testament to the capability of the QFA and the Qatar government and we now look forward to building on the spirit of collaboration as we prepare to resume the captivating action from the East group stage to the final.”

Additionally, the AFC also had to consider the ability of the host to deliver such requirements among others, the video assistant referee technical arrangements, medical requirements and commercial obligations.

The AFC Champions League East region group stage will kick off on November 18, before the round of 16 takes place on December 6 and 7. The knockout Stage will commence with the quarterfinals on December 10 before the Semifinal on December 13.

Best of West

Persepolis defender Shoja Khalilzadeh’s goal against the UAE’s Sharjah on the final matchday of the group stage was voted as the AFC Champions League 2020 Goal of the West.

The center-back’s far-post header with two minutes into the game put the Reds on their way to a 4-0 victory over the Emirati side on September 24.

Khalilzadeh’s goal claimed 48 percent of the votes – registered by the Asian football fans – to stand above Esteghlal striker Cheick Diabate’s header goal against Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli – also on matchday six – which finished on 34 percent.

Also among the candidates were goals from Sepahan’s Reza Mirzaei (against Al Sadd), Sharjah’s Welliton (against Al Taawoun), Al Duhail’s Abdullah al-Ahrak (against Sharjah), Al Nassr’s Abderrazak Hamdallah (against Sepahan), Al Sadd’s Hassan al-Haydos (against Sepahan), Al Taawoun’s Faisel Darwish (against Sharjah), Pakhtakor’s Jaloliddin Masharipov (against Shabab Al Ahli), and Al Nassr’s Abdulrahman al-Obaid (against Al Sadd).

Head coach Majid Namjoo Motlagh’s men went into the game with the knowledge that only a two-goal margin win would secure their place in the Round of 16.

Al-Ahli advanced to the Round of 16 with six points as the first team and Iraq’s Al-Shorta finished in third place.

The Iranian dominance produced a goal in the 28th minute. Farshid Esmaeili received the ball down the left and fed Ghaedi on the edge of the box. The Esteghlal number 10 drilled a powerful drive that nestled into the bottom corner despite Al Owais’ best efforts to save.

Al-Ahli’s troubles were doubled seven minutes before the break as Ghaedi turned from scorer to creator, sending a cross from the right flank into the far post for Ali Karimi who evaded his marker and headed home Esteghlal’s second.

After the restart, Esteghlal was quick to cement its place in the Round of 16 with a third goal.

Karimi supplied a chipped cross from the edge of the penalty area for Cheick Diabate and the Malian forward guided his header past Al Owais to make it 3-0.

The result means Esteghlal finishes second behind confirmed Group A winner Al-Ahli, goal difference giving the Iranian the advantage over Al-Shorta who is consigned to a narrow group stage exit.

Al-Ahli of Saudi Arabia has already booked its place in Round of 16 and the second ticket to this stage will have to be decided on Matchday Six.

Both sides went into the game needing a win to join group leader Al-Ahli into the next round, with Al-Shorta holding a three-point lead, but having played a game more.

Following a Mohammed Mezher corner, Mazin Fayyadh climbed unmarked inside the box, powering a header towards goal, but Seyed Hossein Hosseini made a quality reflex save to deny Al Shorta their opening goal inside the first 10 minutes.

Fayyadh was the danger man again five minutes later, the winger advanced through the heart of Esteghlal’s midfield and tried his luck with a left-footed effort from outside the box. Marwan Hussein tried to pounce on Hosseini’s spilled save, but defender Roozbeh Cheshmi was first to the ball and made the clearance.

Al Shorta’s number 14 finally got his goal in the 25th minute. Fayyadh lost his marker once again and guided his header from Ali Fayez’s corner kick into the bottom far corner of Hosseini’s goal to open the scoring for Al Shorta.

Substitute Amir Arsalan Motahari equalized the match in the 68th minute.

The result means Esteghlal needs to defeat Al-Ahli by two clear goals on Matchday Six, while a 1-0 win for the Iranians would mean they have an identical goal-difference to Al Shorta and the two sides would have to be separated by their disciplinary record.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Head coach Abdulghani Shahd has his eyes set on writing history for Iraqi football as his Al-Shorta side takes on Esteghlal in a do-or-die Group A clash, with the winner earning a place in the 2020 AFC Champions League Round of 16.

A win for the Baghdad-based side or a score draw with more than a goal will be enough to seal progress to the knock-out stage; a feat no Iraqi team in the history of the AFC Champions League has achieved.

Al Shorta beat Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli in its Matchday Four fixture to move up to second, but having drawn Esteghlal 1-1 at home in its opening match, losing to the Iranian team on Sunday will leave them bottom of the group, as will a goalless draw should Esteghlal manage to beat Al-Ahli in the final match of the group.

“This match is a crossroads for both teams. I had previously said this match is the decider and we simply have to win it to avoid waiting for the last game,” said a defiant Shahd.

“We can make history and become the first Iraqi team to reach the Round of 16 and this is the objective for all of us. The group permutations are a bit complicated; we know that if we draw, Al-Ahli will have the top spot secured and might field a weakened team against Esteghlal on Matchday Six, so we want to stay away from these permutations and focus on winning the next game.”

Al-Shorta welcome back Iraqi international right-back Alaa Mhawi from suspension. The 24-year-old had been sent off in the Matchday Three fixture against Al-Ahli, but coach Shahd will be without the services of talismanic midfielder Mohammad Qassim who suffered an injury in the previous match.

“Mhawi is one of the options available to us again, but we focus on playing as a team, rather on individual players. As for Qassim, he is a talented player who offers us a lot of individual solutions, missing him is a blow to our team, but I have faith in all players in my squad,” Shahd concluded.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iraqi midfielder Bashar Resan scored from the spot early in the second half as Iran’s Persepolis edged Al Taawoun 1-0 at the AFC Champions League (ACL) in Doha, Qatar.

A second victory over the Saudi Arabian club in three days saw the Iranian Reds move atop the Group C of the competition.

“I’m so grateful to my players as they played with all their hearts,” said Persepolis manager Yahya Golmohammadi, adding, “We did a good job in the attacking phase and could have scored more goals on the counterattacks.”

The Iranian – whose side will take on Qatari side Al Duhail on Monday before playing the UAE’s Sharjah on the final day of the group stage – urged his side to “stay focused on the remaining two matches as we’re not still guaranteed progress [to the last-16 round].”

Earlier in the day, Al Duhail was stunned 4-2 against Sharjah to sit third in the group – level on points with Al Taawoun – trailing Persepolis by one point, while the Emirati side, reaching the four-point mark, is now well in contention with a place in the knockouts.

Golmohammadi made two changes to the starting eleven that beat the Saudi club by a goal in the mid-week as veteran skipper Seyyed Jalal Hosseini was picked over Hossein Kanaanizadegan in defense, while holding midfielder Kamal Kamyabinia replaced Ahmad Nourollahi.

The Persian Gulf Pro League champion came closest to break the deadlock in the closing stages of the first half when Issa Alekasir’s curling strike from outside the box hit the post.

The 30-year-old striker again missed a chance to score his first goal for the club two minutes after the interval, failing to make a touch on Vahid Amiri’s fine cross, before being brought down by center-back Iago Santos in the box.

The Iraqi referee pointed to the spot as Resan sent Brazilian keeper Cassio the wrong way for the Iranian side’s opener.

Resan could have got his second of the night with 20 minutes left on the clock but saw his low effort from the edge of the box saved by the keeper’s fingertips before coming off the post.

Persepolis – which was five points off the top before the competition resumption – produced a firm defensive performance in the latter stages of the match and a held on for a crucial victory.

Fading hopes

Meanwhile, Sepahan – which got off to flying start in the competition with a massive 4-0 victory over Al Ain in February – was dealt a huge blow to its pursuit of a top-two finish in Group D with a second consecutive 2-0 defeat at the hands of Saudi club Al Nassr.

Abdullah Madu gave Al Nassr the lead in the 32nd minute before Abderazak Hamdallah doubled the score with four minutes to go in the first half.

Friday’s win kept Al Nassr on top of the group with 10 points while Qatari giant Al Sadd thrashed Al Ain 4-0 to stay in the second place with eight points – widening the gap over Sepahan to five with two games to spare.

Sepahan will square off against the Qatari club on Monday knowing that any result other than victory will see the Isfahan-based club’s campaign come to an early end.

Blues on the verge

A victory in Sunday’s encounter against Iraqi side Al Shorta will secure a place in the knockout round for caretaker manager Majid Namjou Motlaq’s Esteghlal.

The Tehran-based Blues’ first two outings after the resumption – a double header against Al Wahda – was called off by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) after the Emirati side was forced to pull out of the competitions due to the diagnosis of several players with COVID-19.

Al Shorta was beaten 1-0 by Al Ahli last Monday but claimed a shocking 2-1 triumph in the reverse fixture to move up to second spot in Group A.

Esteghal – sitting third with one point – could move above the Iraqi side with a better head-to-head result, having settled for a 1-1 draw against Al Shorta on Matchday One.
