France won the World Cup for the second time in spectacular style on Sunday as a 4-2 victory in one of the most entertaining and action-packed finals for decades ended battling outsiders Croatia’s dreams of a first title.

After an early own goal by Mario Mandzukic France’s big guns delivered on the biggest stage of all as Antoine Griezmann – with a penalty awarded after a VAR review – Paul Pogba and teenage tyro Kylian Mbappe all hit the target.

Ivan Perisic and Mandzukic replied for Croatia, who ended beaten but unbowed after making much of the running in their first appearance in the final.

It was the highest-scoring decider since England beat West Germany 4-2 after extra-time in 1966 and the highest in normal time since Brazil defeated Sweden 5-2 60 years ago.

There were as many goals in 90-action-packed Moscow minutes as in the last four finals combined, and three of those went to extra time.

The game featured the first final own goal and the first VAR-decided spot-kick — one that Croatia were furious about and that was arguably the turning point of the game.

But the only statistic France will really care about is that the result makes them world champions for the second time following their triumph on home soil in 1998.

Having lost the 2006 final on penalties to Italy, it also meant there was no repeat of two years ago when they were beaten in the European Championship final by Portugal in Paris.

The win means Didier Deschamps, captain of the 1998 side, becomes the third man to lift the World Cup as player and coach after Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer.

“How marvelous,” Deschamps said having been carried shoulder high around the pitch by his players in a post-match downpour. “It’s a young team who are on the top of the world. Some are champions at the age of 19.

“We did not play a huge game but we showed mental quality – and we scored four goals.

“It hurt so much to lose the Euro two years ago, but it made us learn too and we worked so hard for 55 days here.”

OWN GOAL

Croatia started full of energy but went behind in the 18th minute when a Griezmann free kick skidded in off the head of Mandzukic, who had scored the extra-time winner against England in the semi-final.

That meant it was the fourth successive knockout game in which Croatia conceded first but again they found a way back as Perisic, who got the equalizer against England, smashed in a low shot 10 minutes later.

But then came the moment which will keep the VAR debate at the top of the sport’s agenda.

Perisic flapped an arm at a corner and after Argentine referee Nestor Pitana conducted a protracted VAR review he awarded the 28th penalty of the tournament, another record.

Ignoring more Croatian protests, Griezmann stroked the ball home in the 38th minute for his fourth goal of Russia 2018.

That made it the highest-scoring first half since 1974, when West Germany led the Netherlands 2-1 – also the final score – but this time there was much more to come.

Croatia were on top again after the break but France held out and went 3-1 up on the hour as Mbappe and Griezmann combined to set up Pogba on the edge of the box.

The midfielder’s right-footed shot was blocked but he quickly and coolly curved the rebound in with his left.

Six minutes later Lucas Hernandez tore down the left to set up Mbappe to drill home a low shot as the 19-year-old young player of the tournament claimed his fourth goal in Russia and became the first teenager to score in a final since Pele in 1958.

After three successive extra-time knockout games the chances of Croatia coming back again looked impossible but they were thrown a lifeline by Lloris, who tried to dribble round Mandzukic only for the striker to block the ball and send it into the unguarded net.

Croatia, beaten by the French in the semi-finals in their first World Cup appearance in 1998, continued to press but their energy was sapped and France safely held out.

Croatia’s shirtless fans rightly saluted their players as torrential rain lashed down on the presentation ceremony and coach Zlatko Dalic had few regrets.

“We are sad but proud at the same time,” he said. “We played well but the penalty knocked the wind out of us and after that it was very difficult.

“The French did not surprise us, we let in two soft goals coupled with an own goal and a penalty. We wanted to win the World Cup so much but that’s football.”

Croatia sensationally cemented their first-ever World Cup final with a dramatic 2-1 extra time win over a gallant England side at Luzhniki Stadium in the Russian capital on Wednesday.

A match that became a long battle between two teams displaying warrior spirit began with a Kieran Trippier free-kick within the first five minutes. That goal was cancelled out by a second half Ivan Perisic equalizer to ensure the sides were tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

In the end a goal from striker Mario Mandzukic in the second half of extra time provided the agonizing difference that booked Croatia a first-ever World Cup final place, in which they will meet a formidable-looking ‘Les Bleus’ at the same stadium on Sunday.

Given the weight of the game, which would bring a first ever final for Croatia and a first final in over 50 years for England should they win, there would be some expected early nerves for either side in the Russian capital.

England, however, who have been praised for their youthful side showing little to no fear during the biggest football showpiece on earth, showed no such early worries and attacked from the off.

After just a few minutes, Jesse Lingard showed immense flair in pirouetting over the ball before passing to Dele Alli, who was bundled over by Croatia captain Luka Modric around 20 yards out. Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir had no doubts in ordering a free-kick.

Up stepped a Kieran Trippier, so confident and steady he had been in all England’s games up until that point. That sureness never wavered and the 27-year-old curled beautifully into the top right-hand corner to leave Danijel Subasic, whom many have singled out as the best goalkeeper in the tournament so far, no chance although the Croatian stopper was at full stretch.

The goal was England’s 12th at the World Cup – more than by any other England side at a major tournament. First blood to the Three Lions.

The set piece goal may have come as a shock to most, as it did not involve the head of Harry Maguire or John Stones, and nor was it a penalty. But minutes later and Maguire, England’s center back of the moment, got his head to two corners in quick succession, first from Ashley Young from the left and then Tipper from the right to restore some normality.

Dejan Lovren showed frustration when he brought down Kane near the center circle. Moments later a weak Subasic clearance dropped to Raheem Sterling who played through captain Harry Kane, but he was well offside. The flag went up but the England skipper dragged his effort wide anyway.

Croatia did have their moments, and at the other end that innocuous wizard Luka Modric tried a run down the right flank, but his ball in cannoned out to Ante Rebic, whose powerful left-foot strike was gathered easily by Jordan Pickford.

England, however, would not be contained and Dele Alli laid the ball off to Jesse Lingard, whose placed right-footed shot went well wide. The Croatians did find their groove in parts in the first half, but they were few and far between. A poor Pickford clearance was forwarded to Rakitic, who showed glorious balance and poise to bring the ball under control, but Kyle Walker stood strong to nick the ball from the Barcelona man.

Moments later Walker was on hand to head away a free-kick, but the ball found its way to skipper Modric. Cue midfielder Jordan Henderson to step in and ease the Real Madrid playmaker off the ball. Although Croatia had a touch more of the ball in the first half with 52 percent of possession, it seemed England had contained their opponent’s two most influential players going into the break.

After the restart and the song ‘England’s going to win’ could be heard continuously from England’s traveling band. Forward Mario Mandzukic was the first to receive a yellow card, then Kyle Walker was booked for a mini fracas with Rebic shortly after he cleared when Croatia broke through four against four, the danger eventually petered out.

England continued to attack down the flanks; Trippier volleyed across the box to Kane for him to dive in, but the ball was cleared. In defense, when England broke down Croatia attacks, they were quick to cleverly play the ball forward giving them time to regroup and take pressure off the defense, Jordan Henderson doing well in the center of the park to keep control of possession.

One England player unusually the target of criticism often is Raheem Sterling. The forward went down in the Croatia area but arose to try and poke the ball across goal, but no penalty was appealed for or given.

Modric broke down the right but his ball into the area was cleared only as far as Ivan Perisic who shot from around 14 yards. Pickford was quick to dive but the ball was blocked, and then cleared out. Panic for England averted.

The old football cliche ‘getting a goal from nothing’ reared its head. A ball in from the right flank by Sime Vrsaljko had Kyle Walker stooping to head to safety, but an onrushing Ivan Perisic arrived at the back to poke the ball home with a high left boot to net his second in six World Cup games and with it make it all square again.

After the goal, England began with much more urgency and formulated clever attacks from the back. A combination of passes from Henderson and then Sterling set Lingard free but the through ball was over-hit and Subasic collected.

Croatia on the other hand sensed blood. Perisic made space for the shot form wide on the left-hand side of the area which agonizingly hit the far post and the rebound found its way into Pickford’s hands. Moments later and Alli and Young’s attempts to play the ball out lost possession, a Croatian corner was cleared but found its way to Rakitic, who powered well over.

England did have their chances, Raheem Sterling pushed forward but his low ball whipped in across the box flashed across the goal. At the back, their normally formidable defensive line showed signs of tiredness which led to Pickford being exposed more than he would have liked, but the England keeper still remained confident.

A Kieran Trippier free-kick from just in the final third on the right flank was headed down and into the ground by Harry Kane, but was well wide. That was the last action of the 90, and extra time beckoned for the second time for England and the third successive time for Croatia at the tournament.

The match destined to be a survival of the fittest, which precipitated changes. One of those was substitute Danny Rose, who brilliantly created space to lay off to fellow sub Eric Dier to shoot but his effort went well over. From the resulting corner, John Stones’ header was agonizingly cleared off the line by Vrsaljko.

Rashford then cynically brought down the full back on the right flank to give Croatia a free-kick in a dangerous area, although the attack was dealt with despite some danger. England still looked comfortable at the back and still willing to bring the ball forward.

At end of first half of extra time Perisic was set free on the left, his ball in found Kramaric but his shot was cleared. Then English hearts were in mouths when Mandzukic was set free in the area, but his touch goalwards deflected off Pickford at full stretch, although the ensuing and unavoidable collision forced the striker to stay down for treatment.

The striker recovered in time to latch onto a flick-on header from Perisic in the second half of extra time, which was guided straight into his path as the defense seemed to be caught ball-watching. The Juventus man snuck behind the backline and made no mistake in tucking the ball away past Pickford to make the score 2-1 Croatia with 109 minutes played.

England did continue to push forward, but their frustration boiled over in extra time added time when Dele Alli had a coming together with Rakitic. Marcus Rashford’s free-kick provided the last glimmer of hope for England, but when the ball was cleared the referee’s whistle soon followed and the fate of both sides was sealed.

Croatia, who have not won one of their three knockout matches in normal time, for the third time came from behind to win and book their place in the final of the tournament. For England, football is not coming home, but their fearless young side made sure a part of it was briefly returned to their nation.

As the only remaining team of Group B in 2018 World Cup, Spain, was eliminated by Russia, public opinion and even some experts are beginning to cast doubt on whether Iran was in ‘Group of Death’ or not.

Iran national football team was drawn in Group B of 2018 World Cup along with 2012 World Champion Spain, 2016 UEFA Champion Portugal and 2018 African Nations Champion Morocco.

When the Brazilian football legend Cafu displayed the slip of Iran during the Final Draw for the 2018 FIFA World Cup at the Kremlin Palace on December 1, Iranians were filled with excitement.

People had diverse views on this incident; many felt disappointed and believed that Iran has no chance against these big names. While others insisted that Iran always plays well against great teams.

Many believed that Iran was certainly in the ‘Group of Death’, saying that a decent elimination from group stage can be the best result for Team Melli; and it happened, but now the group’s level of toughness is called into question.

Iran won the first game against Morocco, but lost the match to Spain and gained 1 point from Cristiano Ronaldo’s side.

With 4 points, Team Melli stood at the third place of Group B, just behind 5-pointed Spain and Portugal, and ‘decently’ eliminated from the World Cup.

In the round of 16, Uruguay defeated Portugal 2-1 on June 30 to destroy Ronaldo’s dreams for completing his awards collection with Golden Boot and world champion.

And Spain, the other remaining team of Group B, lost the Sunday match to Russia in penalty shootouts to prove that it is far from the ideal La Roja.

Iran’s great defensive wall was repeatedly praised by many experts both in the country and beyond and especially by general public. However, the defeat of Iran’s ex-opponents in the round of 16, combined with the performance of other Asian representatives, has created a wave of doubt towards the actual performance of Team Melli.

Iran’s traditional rivals in Asia, namely Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia, had compelling performance in some of their games.

Despite the loss against Poland in the final match, Japan advanced to the knockout stage to be the only representative of Asia in next round.

South Korea stunned the football world with a 2-0 victory over title-holder Germany. This result was enough to send the Mannschaft home and list the Asian team as a ‘phenomenon’.

And Saudi Arabia had a true comeback against Egypt on their last match, winning the African team 2-1 which partly alleviated the pain of that humiliating 5-0 defeat to Russia at the 2018 World Cup opening game.

Iranian people were happy (and maybe still are) with the unprecedented result of their national team in the history of World Cup finals. Even after the team lost the match to Spain, some people came to streets to praise their team.

All in all, it seems that Group B wasn’t really the ‘Group of Death’, and general public’s level of satisfaction from Team Melli seems to have decreased after recent incidents.

Queiroz’s men now eye to reclaim the title of 2019 AFC Asian Cup after some 42 years. The competition is going to be held in United Arab Emirates from January 5 to February 1.

Germany can ill afford another slip-up when they take on Sweden at the World Cup on Saturday, as the defending champions attempt to follow Brazil’s lead by belatedly springing into life.

Joachim Loew’s side slumped to a 1-0 defeat against Mexico in their opening Group F match, paying the price for a calamitous first half in a performance that drew stinging, widespread criticism.

Lothar Matthaeus, the 1990 World Cup-winning captain, said he hadn’t seen a Germany team “so weak at a big tournament for a long time” following the loss in Moscow.

The holders will likely be without defensive pillar Mats Hummels due to a neck injury, while Marco Reus could be handed a start after a bright 30-minute cameo off the bench against Mexico.

“Everyone is ready to fight for their lives,” said striker Timo Werner, who is again set to lead the Germany attack.

With 10 World Cup goals to his name, Germany will also expect more from Thomas Mueller at his third finals appearance.

AFP / Adrian DENNISGermany’s coach Joachim Loew (C) leads a training session at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi on June 22, on the eve of their Russia 2018 World Cup Group F match against Sweden

“The pressure is terrifically high, but we won’t win both games if we beat ourselves up internally and look for the mistakes in each other,” said Mueller, with Germany to meet South Korea in their final match.

Sweden beat the Koreans 1-0 to join Mexico at the top of the section, but a stomach bug has prevented three players — Pontus Jansson, Filip Helander and Marcus Rohden — from travelling to Sochi.

They could yet make the trip separately, with Sweden also hoping Victor Lindelof can return after sitting out the opener due to an illness of his own.

“This is really what you spend your whole career and life working towards. It is an extraordinary opportunity to be involved in a World Cup match like this,” said Sweden boss Janne Andersson.

“Whether we knock out Germany is one thing, but we have a chance to qualify and that is extraordinary.”

Philippe Coutinho broke the deadlock in the 91st minute, with Neymar volleying in a second with virtually the last kick of the game.

Brazil must pick up at least a point against Serbia next Wednesday to be assured of progressing, with Switzerland also in a strong position in Group E after Xherdan Shaqiri’s 90th-minute winner in a 2-1 victory over Serbia.

Romelu Lukaku and Belgium can effectively lock up a last 16 berth with victory over Tunisia in Moscow in Group G, ahead of a blockbuster clash with England next week.

Lukaku scored twice in a 3-0 win over debutants Panama, and Roberto Martinez is trying to finally squeeze the best out of a squad brimming with talent.

“It has caused a lot of excitement for us and we are even stronger in our belief that we can do it.”

Uruguay and host nation Russia progressed to the World Cup knockout rounds on Wednesday as Cristiano Ronaldo took an early lead in the race for the Golden Boot.

A single goal from Luis Suarez was enough to give Uruguay victory against Saudi Arabia, leaving them on six points along with Russia and condemning Egypt and the Saudis to an early exit.

Russia and Uruguay will face one of the top two from Group B in the last 16 — either Portugal, Spain or Iran.

Suarez took advantage of a goalkeeping error by Mohammed Al-Owais in Rostov-on-Don to put his side ahead midway through the first half and the Saudis could not respond.

Barcelona forward Suarez has exited the last two World Cups in disgrace after being sent off for a goal-line handball against Ghana in 2010, and he infamously sank his teeth into Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in 2014.

In the earlier game, in Group B, Ronaldo netted his fourth goal of the tournament in a 1-0 win against Morocco for European champions Portugal, ending the north Africans’ chances of progress.

The Real Madrid player, who won his fifth Champions League crown last month, now has 85 international goals — a record for a European player.

“I’m happy I scored the goal but the most important thing is that we won the game. We have to think match by match in order to progress,” he said.

Disappointed Morocco coach Herve Renard said his side could take pride from their performances in Russia despite being out of the running to qualify for the last 16.

“We qualified for a World Cup after 20 years and we’ve showed that we can play football,” he said. “We do play football.”

– Spain stress –

In the later match in Group B, Spain head to Kazan to face Iran, still counting the cost of a chaotic run-up to the tournament during which Julen Lopetegui was sensationally sacked just two days before they opened their campaign.

Former international defender Fernando Hierro is now at the helm and has the job of steadying the ship and steering Andres Iniesta and his teammates into the last 16.

“It’s a crucial match that will determine our World Cup destiny,” said midfielder Isco of the Iran showdown.

“We want to score from the opening minute, even though that won’t be easy.”

“We are well aware of Spain’s reputation, so we’ll have to play our best game ever. In the end the football gods will decide,” said the former Real Madrid coach.

Iran have never beaten a European side at a World Cup — their only previous victory was a 2-1 win over the United States in France in 1998.

Hosts Russia beat Egypt 3-1 in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday, a result which paved the way for them to move into the next round despite pre-tournament expectations that they would struggle to get out of their group.

After a goalless first half, Egypt captain Ahmed Fathi scored an own goal before Denis Cheryshev struck and Artem Dzyuba added a third. Mohamed Salah scored a consolation penalty late on but it was not enough for the Pharaohs.

Coach Stansislav Cherchesov was asked if it was the happiest day of his life. “I hope,” he said, “there are more to come.”

The Wednesday match against Spain was fast-paced and breathtaking. Iran had enjoyed its top of the group position with three points gained from victory against Morocco, and faced off Spain with renewed energy and solid determination to win.

The winner of the World Cup 2010, 2008 and 2012 Euro champion, with the most expensive lineup for a team, Spain still struggled to make an opening against Iran. Costa’s goal came in the 54th minute, as Ramin Rezaian tried to kick the ball away, but the ball bounced back, hitting Costa and getting into the goal.

Spain, as it happened, had luck on its side, plus everything else. Iran went in with deep, solid defense, and had three brilliant chances to score: the first in the 53th minute as Karim Ansarifard’s shot flew into the side-netting; the second was when Saeid Ezatolahi put the ball past David de Gea, but the goal was disallowed for offside. The third chance was when Mehdi Taremi leaped to head the ball, but the ball flew over the bar from six yards.

The game ended 1-0 for Spain, giving the team its first win in the tournament. Spain and Portugal are on four points, while Iran is on three, which makes the last group stage match against Portugal all the more intense and terrifying. Iran will face Portugal on Monday in the final showdown that would decide whether Queiroz’s boys could advance to the next stage.

The Danish CEO of adidas told RT on Saturday that it’s important for his company and others to realize they’re in the business of sport, not politics.

He went on to explain that the Iranian team is one of 12 teams being sponsored by adidas. That’s despite the fact that Nike pulled out of supplying their shoes because of US sanctions.

“We equip the Iranian team because a lot of Iranians love football, and at the end of the day we believe in sport, we believe that through sport we have the power to change lives. If we start being a political engine then we don’t actually have the freedom to do what we want to do and that’s really making people’s lives better,” he added.

Prior to World Cup 2018, the American company Nike announced it would not be providing equipment to Iranian players due to the U.S. sanctions imposed on Iran.

“US sanctions mean that, as a US company, Nike cannot supply shoes to players in the Iranian national team at this time,” a company statement said, TehranTimes reported.

Describing Nike’s statement as “absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary,” Iran National Football Team coach Carlos Quieroz had lamented the announcement and asked FIFA to enter this issue. “Players get used to their sports equipment, and it’s not right to change them a week before such important matches,” he added.

After all these controversies, Iran faced Morocco at their first game and secured a 1-0 win over the top African team. Iranian users of social media creatively changed the slogan of Nike to “We just did it without you,” to criticize the statement of the American company.

The FIFA Referees Committee has selected 36 referees and 63 assistant referees, representing 46 different countries, for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.

Alireza Faghani from Iran has been appointed as a match official at the FIFA World Cup, while Mohammadreza Mansouri and Reza Sokhandan were selected as assistant referees.

Preparations for the road to Russia kicked off in September 2014 not only for the 32 participating teams, but also for the initial group of 53 FIFA referee trios from around the world.

The choice of the final group of match officials selected to officiate at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia was based on each referee’s skills and personality, as well as his level of understanding of football and ability to read both the game and the various tactics employed by teams.

Over the last three years, preparatory seminars have taken place for referees and assistant referees focusing on fair play, protecting players and the image of the game, as well as consistency and uniformity. The selected FIFA World Cup match officials will attend another dedicated seminar for two weeks in the second half of April at the technical center of the Italian Football Association in Coverciano, Italy. The officials will be divided into two groups, which will also include video assistant referee (VAR) candidates, FIFA.com reported.

Following this seminar, the FIFA Referees Committee will announce the names of the referees selected to act as VARs during football’s most important competition, the FIFA World Cup. The selection process will take into account the candidate’s VAR experience in domestic leagues, FIFA competitions and FIFA refereeing seminars since the beginning of the VAR project in 2016.

Between now and the World Cup in June, the selected referees, assistant referees and VARs will be monitored and supported by FIFA Refereeing on an individual basis to ensure they are fully prepared. Following the seminar in Coverciano, all of the match officials will take part in a final preparatory seminar at the FIFA World Cup match officials’ HQ in Moscow, which will start ten days before the tournament kicks off. This seminar will also cover VAR.

During the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the selected match officials will operate in a variety of roles, e.g. referees, assistant referees, fourth officials, reserve assistant referees and video match officials.

IR Iran are all set to make their second consecutive FIFA World Cup™ appearance in a few months, the first time they will have graced two world finals in a row. And as was the case at Brazil 2014, the Iranians will have Carlos Queiroz at the helm. The experienced Portuguese coach is currently in Sochi attending the Russia 2018 Team Workshop, where preparations for the tournament are being finalized. “It’s essential for us to have detailed information on the technical aspects of the World Cup and how it’s going to unfold,” said Queiroz.

Absent from the big stage for eight years, Team Melli made their return to the world finals four years ago and built on that achievement by becoming the first Asian team to book their place at Russia 2018, following a near-perfect qualification campaign.

Looking ahead to the competition, the Iran coach spoke exclusively to FIFA.com about the new challenges facing his side and the test they will face in a tough Group B, where he will come up against his compatriots, having coached them at South Africa 2010.

FIFA.com: What is the team hoping to achieve in Russia? Iran are making their second World Cup appearance in a row, which means there will be more pressure on them.

Carlos Queiroz: Iran have come on a lot. With the experience of Brazil 2014 under our belts and with several players having since moved to Europe, we’ve become more solid and competitive. Playing in the Asian leagues is not the same as playing international football. We’ve become a better side. We’re the best Asian team in the FIFA Ranking, we didn’t lose a game in the qualifiers, and we only conceded a couple of goals. That’s why we’re going to Russia with a very clear dream in mind.

What is that dream?

We want to get through to the second round, but that obviously going to be a very difficult task. Everyone’s agreed that we’re in the hardest group at the World Cup, as we’ll be coming up against two title contenders in Spain and Portugal. But our duty is to go and improve on past performances and to keep making progress, not just at Russia 2018 but at the upcoming Asian competitions and the next World Cup qualifiers. The objective is to go through to the knockout phase, though we need to prepare the right way if we want to do that.

Do you feel a little strange about taking on Portugal?

I prefer to think that we’re taking on Spain and playing Portugal (laughs). As a Portuguese coach, I think that playing against Portugal is an opportunity and a very special moment both for me and my players. It will be interesting to play them and Spain and Morocco. It’s going to be a very attractive group at this World Cup.

Talking of special moments, what will it mean to you to have Cristiano Ronaldo on the other side of the pitch?

It’s going to be special, as it always is when you take on great players. In this case, it’s the best player in the world. But when the match starts there are just two teams who are trying to win. Football will decide who wins the day and who was better on the field of play.

What memories do you have of Cristiano? Your paths have crossed many times.

The memories stay with you, of course they do, especially in shared projects, like we had at Manchester [United] and the Portuguese national team. That was a long time ago, though. The South Africa World Cup was a few years ago now. Times have changed and now I’ve got other Ronaldos with me. They’re important players… the likes of [Alireza] Jahanbakhsh, [Reza] Goochannejad, [Ali] Karimi, etc. These are the Ronaldos I’ve got to look after now and who I’ve got to pay attention to achieve the success we all want.

You came up against another great player in Lionel Messi at Brazil 2014, and you know to your cost how players of his ability can punish a momentary lapse in concentration… (Interrupts)

I’ve always said that Messi is an extraordinary player. He’s out of this world. If he were human, he wouldn’t have had that magical moment in that match (Argentina beat Iran in the group phase with a late Messi goal). I don’t usually like losing, but I didn’t come away from that defeat with a negative feeling. It’s when something magical like that happens that you know that football is alive and kicking, and that’s why it’s one of the best sports in the world to watch. And it’s even more of a special moment when it comes from a player who shouldn’t be allowed to play by FIFA until it’s proven that he’s actually human!

One last question, and seeing as we’re in Russia: how important is it for you to be able to count on players who play their club football here (Sardar Azmoun, Saeid Ezatolahi and Milad Mohammadi)?

It’s very important, no question. It’s all part of the development process for Iranian players. In 2011 we had just the one player based in Spain, but now we’ve got nearly 60 percent of the starting line-up playing in Europe, three of whom happen to be in the Russian league. This is going to be important for the team because it’s going to build our knowledge and give us more of an affinity with the Russians. That just shows you all the different ways in which Iranian football has progressed over the last eight years.
