TEHRAN – Esteghlal of Iran were held to a 1-1 draw by Al Ain of the UAE in Matchday Four of the AFC Champions League on Monday.
In the match held in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium, Mame Thiam found the back of the net from the penalty spot in the 42nd minute.
Al Ain managed to control the match in the second half and put the Iranian team under pressure in front of 100,000 spectators.
In the 78th minute, Al Ain’s Tsukasa Shiotani equalized the match with an accurate curling shot from outside of the box.
Earlier in the day, Al Rayyan of Qatar beat Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Doha’s Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.
Esteghlal remain top of the table with six points on goal difference.
Al Rayan sit in second place (six points, +1), Al Ain are third with three points and al Hilal sit bottom of table with two points.
