MPs stress Iran’s adherence to int’l law, humanitarian principles during crises
TEHRAN (Iran News) The participants emphasized the role of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting solidarity, dialogue, and multilateralism.
They also urged all countries to adhere to the principles of international humanitarian law and to avoid the politicization of humanitarian aid.
On the sidelines of the IPU General Assembly meetings, the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), and the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), the members of the Iranian delegation also met with the speakers and deputy speakers of various parliaments to exchange views on regional and international issues.
The IPU final statement, signed by all member states, highlighted support for and respect of international humanitarian law and the strengthening of humanitarian actions during crises.
Noting the unprecedented increase in armed conflicts and the vulnerability of civilians, especially women, children, the elderly, and the displaced, the document stressed the necessity of protecting civilian infrastructure, hospitals, and medical and relief personnel.
In its statement stressed the prohibition of weapons with long-term humanitarian effects, such as anti-personnel mines and cluster munitions, and warned against the politicization of humanitarian aid and reductions in global relief funding.” int’l law”
It further called on governments to guarantee rapid and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid and to provide financial and political support to institutions like the International Committee of the Red Cross and UN-affiliated relief organizations.
All parliaments committed to strengthening the implementation of international humanitarian law within their domestic legislation, institutionalizing the training of these principles within their armed forces, and effectively enforcing mechanisms to address violations of humanitarian law and war crimes.
It also emphasized the necessity of increasing the participation of women and youth in decision-making processes related to peace and security, and utilizing parliamentary diplomacy to strengthen solidarity and dialogue.
