Qalibaf Elected Parliament Speaker of Iran
Iranian lawmakers on Tuesday elected Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf as the speaker of the new Parliament.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Out of the 287 lawmakers present at an open session of the Parliament on Tuesday, 198 voted for Qalibaf, 60 for Mojtaba Zonnur, and 5 for Manouchehr Mottaki, a one-time foreign minister.

Qalibaf has taken the helm at the Parliament since May 2020.

The newly-elected Iranian lawmakers held the first session of the 12th Parliament after victory of the Islamic Revolution on Monday, May 27.

The countrywide elections for the Parliament and the Assembly of Experts were held on March 1.

Around 61 million Iranian people were eligible to vote, including 3.5 million first-time voters.

The run-off parliamentary polls were held on May 10 to fill 45 remaining seats in the legislature.

There are 290 seats in the Iranian Parliament. The lawmakers are elected for a 4-year term, with no limitation for the incumbent or former parliamentarians to run again.
