TASHKENT – The Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan in a press conference on the eve of national referendum on renewing Uzbekistan Constitution briefed the reporters of the objectives behind the referendum and called it a new era in the history of Uzbekistan.

TEHRAN (Iran News) On Saturday and on the eve of the referendum, Mr. Nizamkhodjaev, chairman of the Central Election Commission, in a press conference said that the referendum will be a biggest event in the history of Uzbekistan and it will give more freedom and social changes in the life of the people.

He noted that the commission received over 220,000 proposals during the drafting process of the referendum. He added that President Shavkat Mirziyoyev proposed the idea of renewing the Constitution for more engagement of the people in administering the country as well as for more social, freedom and human rights values in the country which was approved by the parliament and tomorrow (April 30) people will go to the polls for renewing the constitution.

The renews Constitution will bring many changes in Uzbekistan in the field of employment, economy, access to education, access to healthcare, increasing the role of the parliament, human rights, compact and accountable government, religious freedom, local government, development of civil society institutions and the rule of law as well as peaceful foreign policy.

He added that after the approval of decision for the referendum, in May 2022, a constitutional commission was established with 47 members.

He then explained the process of implementing the referendum and said that on March 13, 2023, the Senate confirmed the decision of the legislative chamber regarding the referendum on April 30, 2023.

He added that the new draft shows almost 65% changes in the Constitution and human rights and freedom of expression are of the major issues taken into the consideration in this renewed Constitution.

Nizamkhdjaev then reiterate that the commission is not in a position to talk about the details of the referendum before it is carried out and this is the people who will decide the fate of the new constitution for their future and the commission is only in charge of organizing and holding the referendum.
