TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami said that the Republic of Azerbaijan will gain access to the Persian Gulf region via the Ardebil-Mianeh railway.
“The Ardebil governorate has allocated a special budget for the continuation of construction of a railway from Ardebil to the border city of Parsabad so that the railway of the Republic of Azerbaijan will be connected to the railway network of Iran and the Persian Gulf in the near future,” Eslami said, according to Fars News Agency.
“Railway laying of Ardebil-Mianeh began in 2019, with a length of 174 km while its executive operations are underway in 12 sections in a timely manner,” he added.
In late July, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev reviewed bilateral relations, stressing the need for the implementation of the Rasht-Astara railway.
Rouhani said, “Fortunately, with the efforts of the officials of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan, we are witnessing good, friendly, and developing relations between the two countries in recent years.”
The president also stated that the officials of the two countries can hold consultations via videoconference during the coronavirus era, in which face-to-face meetings and travel is difficult.
