TEHRAN (Iran News) – Russian President Vladimir Putin’s sudden announcement of constitutional changes that prompted the prime minister’s departure won’t affect increasingly close ties between China and Russia, China said Thursday.

Under Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the China-Russia “strategic cooperative ties has entered a new era, becoming increasingly mature, stable and resilient,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a daily briefing.

Bilateral relations “will not be affected by changes in the international situation and the respective domestic political processes of both sides,” Geng said, AP reported.

He also praised former Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev for promoting Russian-Chinese ties, especially in the economic field.

The countries, former Cold War rivals for leadership of the communist bloc, have increasingly close relations over the past two decades.

China has been a key customer for Russian armaments, gas, oil and other resources, while their governments have aligned their foreign policies to oppose US influence in international affairs.

Putin on Wednesday proposed changes to the constitution that could keep him in power well past the end of his term in 2024, setting in motion a surprise shakeup of Russia’s leadership.

Medvedev resigned hours later and Putin named the little-known head of Russia’s tax service to replace him.
