It was a reoccurrence of the problem that forced her to withdraw from the yer-end championships in November.

"Unfortunately, I will not be able to play the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships this year because of the back injury that's been bothering me since the end of last season," Safina said on her official website.

Safina did not say when she expects to return to the tour, but is still entered for Indian Wells in March.
