Iran’s nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi said Tue. that Iran has built a new rotor factory that can produce about 60 centrifuges a day to increase the uranium enrichment capacity to 190000 SWU upon the directive of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution.
Head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization Ali Akbar Salehi made the remarks on Iranian state TV last night, during which he said that “instead of building the factory in seven or eight years from now, we built it during the negotiations, but did not inaugrate it,” adding that the factory has now come on stream upon the order of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khamenei, who had been completely informed about the process.
He went on to add, “a day after the Leader’s directive, on 4 June, we inaugrated a part of the factory … On the same day, I annoucned that the other part of the factory would be inaugrated in the next month, and now it is almost finished.”
Salehi said that the factory could produce about 60 IR-6 centrifuges a day, indicating that it would increase the enrichment capacity by 600 SWU per day, 18,000 SWU per month, and it is estimated to produce 180,000 SWU within 10 months, which is close to the 190000 SWU that the Leader has requested.
Also on Tuesday, the spokesman for the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization Behrouz Kamalvandi expressed his organization’s preparedness to increase uranium enrichment capacity to higher levels if the talks to save the nuclear deal fail.
“We have of course adopted some measures in order to prepare the ground for eventually increasing the level of enrichment if it is needed and if the negotiations with the Europeans fail,” he was quoted as saying by Press TV on Tuesday.
“We are of course continuing to carry out and implement our obligations based on the JCPOA,” Kamalvandi noted, according to Press TV.
